In order to ensure that a systematic and safe ship recycling method is followed across the various ship recycling yards around the world, the Hong Kong Convention (HKC) was adopted at a Diplomatic conference held in Hong Kong in May 2009. HKC provides extensive guidelines for green ship recycling to ensure that the ships are recycled in a safe and environmentally sound manner. In fact, HKC gives out guidelines right from the time the ship is being built, up to the time the ship is recycled. When ships are recycled as per the HKC guidelines or any method which ensures recycling as per HKC guidelines at the minimum, such a recycling is called green ship recycling.

Green Ship Recycling is very important and we always encourage Ship Owners to recycle their ships at a HKC certified yard (which ensures green ship recycling) because green ship recycling ensures that there is minimal environmental impact and it is also ensures safety of workers. Since ships have some hazardous materials, it is important to identify, remove, store and dispose these hazardous materials to government authorised agencies only. Similarly, following of safe practices prescribed in the green ship recycling procedures ensures safety of workers.
